Making the Most of Your Giving
Denise Rau
Denise Rau spent the majority of her career in the world of finance. But even with her years of experience in banking and in financial advising, she was able to learn new tools that would make the most impact on her philanthropic giving.
“If you are charitably inclined, these vehicles are really the right move,” says Denise. “You can actually, give more.” Growing up in a philanthropic household, Denise always felt called to give back.
Through the Community Foundation of Southwest Louisiana, Denise was able to philanthropically support the community that has given so much to her by establishing a Donor Advised Fund.
“The community in Lake Charles is really special,” says Denise. “People look out for each other. I’ve lived in several big cities – Austin, Charlotte, Dallas, New Orleans – but when you are settling down and establishing roots, Lake Charles is just a wonderful place.”
It was during a meeting with a charitable giving expert that Denise learned about different ways to give. By giving appreciated securities to her Donor Advised Fund, Denise would be able to make more of an impact on charities that mattered to her.
“I thought ‘Oh my goodness! I can donate these shares of stock from a previous job and avoid taxes!’ I was actually able to give more to a charity that spoke to my heart,” says Denise.
One of the things Denise loves about having a Donor Advised Fund through the Community Foundation is the flexibility. She is able to change her philanthropic priorities based on the needs of her community.
“Giving can change as your passions change,” says Denise. “It can also change as your family grows. It’s just really easy to contribute to a Donor Advised Fund. It really allows you to direct your giving to what tugs at your heart and where you can make the biggest impact.”
Denise hopes to grow her giving into an endowment that honors her late father. But she knows that through tools, like the Donor Advised Fund and giving appreciated securities, she’ll be able to make a big impact on things that truly matter to her.
