Giving back with purpose: Julie and Chris McCall’s journey with the community foundation
When Chris McCall attended a meeting hosted by the Community Foundation, he expected to learn a little more about philanthropy. What he walked away with, however, was something far more meaningful: a deep appreciation for the many creative ways individuals can make a difference in their own community.
Inspired by that experience, Chris and his wife Julie decided to open a Donor Advised Fund (DAF) with the Community Foundation. Since then, their giving has become more intentional, flexible, and impactful.
“Having a DAF has actually motivated us to give even more to the community,” they explain. “When we become aware of a need, we can reach out to the Community Foundation and receive immediate assistance in determining how to meet this need.”
One of the most meaningful outcomes of their partnership with the Foundation has been the creation of an annual scholarship fund in memory of two of Julie’s childhood friends who passed away.
The Cherry Ridge Friends Scholarship, in honor of Kim Armitage and Cindy Williams, has the purpose of supporting Bastrop High School students who know the value of friendship and who strive to be the best friends that they can be, just as Kim and Cindy did during their lives.
“This scholarship allows us to both preserve their memory and to provide financial support to students who need help in fulfilling their educational goals,” Julie says. “We are hoping that we set a good example for our daughters of the importance of giving back and helping others,” Chris adds.
Attending the annual awards ceremony where the scholarship is presented has become a cherished tradition.
“It is a heartwarming experience to see these students learn that they will be receiving the scholarship,” Chris says. “It is also very gratifying to think they we may have played just a small role in helping them achieve their dreams.”

When asked to describe their experience with the Community Foundation, Chris and Julie don’t hesitate: “Compassion and professionalism.”
Those two words reflect not only how the Foundation operates, but also the spirit in which it empowers donors to create lasting impact.
